Le « réalisme épique » de Salammbô
FR Cet article analyse les raisons qui ont pu pousser Saint-René Taillandier à attribuer à Salammbô de Flaubert le qualificatif de « réalisme épique ». Très critique sous sa plume, cette expression permet néanmoins d’envisager le rapport ambivalent de Flaubert à l’épopée, et la manière toute particulière qu’il a de construire, avec Salammbô, un roman historique fondé sur l’« imagination scientifique ». C’est donc également du rôle proprement poétique de l’antiquité que traite cet article, et du rapport que tisse Flaubert entre passé et présent, par le biais d’un sombre roman où se donne à lire, selon son auteur, l’origine de notre société monothéiste.

EN This article analyses the reasons that led Saint-René Taillandier to describe Flaubert's Salammbô as « epic realism ». Although highly critical of Flaubert's work, this expression nevertheless allows us to consider Flaubert’s ambivalent relationship with epics, and the very particular way in which he constructs, in Salammbô, a historical novel based on « scientific imagination ». This article therefore also deals with the specifically poetic role of antiquity, and the relationship that Flaubert weaves between past and present through a very dark novel that, according to its author, reveals the origins of our monotheistic society.
